Voltando às minis - Back to minis

Well, there's no better therapy than minis, right? :) But I didn't feel ready to develop my own from scratch, so the best I could do now was to invest my time assembling a Chinese DIY kit I got from ebay a while a go. This one (image taken from internet):

This kind of kit has some positive and negative aspects:
+ they are very inexpensive!
+ they are really cute!
+ they come with everything you see inside plus the structure. All you need are the tools to make them (you probably already have them anyway)
- they are not in 1:12 scale. I think they are in 1:18, hence a little smaller. If you want to add some extra minis you might already have, they might not blend in well.
- even having the "English" version of the manual (the quotation marks are because the English is kinda weird, lol) it is really hard to assemble some items. They are small, no slots to fit. As the wood is painted, glue won't hold them together that well. If I didn't have my own set of "tricks", collected over the years of miniature making, I would have gotten VERY frustrated at several moments... So, if you are a beginner, think twice before starting your adventures in the mini world with one of those kits!

The thing is that I thought, despite the original kit being really cute, that there were way too many things inside it. I like more minimalist/clean settings. This way we can appreciate better all the minis inside. So I wanted to have two structures instead of one, and divide the contents between them. As I have no idea where I could get a duplicate of the structure only, I had to make a similar one myself... I didn't make it to sell, and I won't share the details here so as not to infringe copyrights. That was not my intention! I just wanted to divide the contents into two identical structures!

2) as janelas. Fiquei doidinha tentando.
Nevertheless, in the next posts (it might take a few days, thanks for your patience! :)  ) I will share how I made two things in my version of the strucutre:
1) the lightening. Many Brazilians have difficulty with this, not only on how to do it but also on what to use and where to buy. And I'll show how I did and where I got the items. I did not follow the original kit instructions about this, so it's my "how-to"
2) the windows. Again, I did not follow the original kit instructions. I tried, but it almost drove me crazy! So I gave up and did it my way. And this technique I used can be used to create any window for any structure, so I will share with you.

Well, the first step was to figure out which pieces were part of the structure:

E duplicar!
Then I duplicated them! I used foamboard and balsa wood.

And here are both structures, already finished:

Com a luz funcionando:
Lights on:

Pelo lado de trás, com "jardinagem":
The back side, with "landscaping":

And, after several days struggling with the manual and the fiddly parts, both sets are completed. In one of them I placed the table, the chair and the wall cupboard, making a cozy corner for the afternoon tea. In the other one I placed the side table, the little shelf and the plants shelf, turning it into a gardening corner:

Então, gostou? :)

Banheiro da loja - A lavatory for the store

Ok, I know I said I wouldn't post about the store anymore! :) This is just, let's say, an addendum.

When I was planning the interior of the store, several months ago, I thought about including a small water closet (lavatory). I found a very interesting book that teaches how to make period lavatories using found items.

I didn't copy any of the lavatories in the book, but I did apply the same principles to make my own. I used the parts below, a porcelain sink I already had, balsa wood and made the parts.

I cut the plastic of a glue blister to make the water tank.
But, as I tested the layout, I realized an extra room inside for the lavatory would block the view to the interior of the store and take up a lot of space... So I gave up including one in the structure.

But I didn't give up on the pieces I had already made. Remember that fake door I placed on the back wall of the store for the pictures? Guess where it "opens" to?

That's right! I used the pieces I had made, printed the tiles for the walls & for the floor, assembled the box on foamboard, used a picture frame on the front and voilá! Here is the turn of the 19th century lavatory...

The candle is a commercial miniature, the holder/sconce is made of findings.
:) Gostou?
Well, I really doubt any 'regular' store back then would have such a fancy lavatory, but it was fun to make. :) How do you like it?

Ganhei presentes! - I got gifts!

Last month I got a VERY special gift!!! Sheila Cristina, a miniaturist from Belém, Para (North of Brazil), a faithful follower of DHB and my personal blog (this very one...), happens to be a specialist in creating miniature sculptures of bride & grooms for top-of-the-cake. I made her a sofa set in 1:24 and, in return, she decided to make a mini version of me... :) I didn't make her work easy at all, as I absolutely hate to be in pictures, so I didn't have any good ones to send her so she could base her work on. Only a very old one... But I was very fond of the idea of having miniatures of my 'furry children', Garotão (Big Boy), a 18-years-old dog I adopted when he was 6 (he had been abandoned on the streets by his previous owner's family, after he died) and Bianca, a cat I also adopted but that has already crossed the Rainbow Bridge in November 2011, at the age of 17 1/2.

When that special gift arrived, I was in awe! Even my mother could see the resemblance. And I also got a mini-desk with mini-dollhouses in progress, so beautiful!!! Well, such a great gift deserves nothing less than a setting of its own, of course... I didn't have any roombox that would fit them, as they are in 1:6 or playscale (which fits better for her work)

A mini-eu com a 'Bianca' no colo...
Mini-me with 'Bianca' in her arms...
I found a 'hollow niche' a crafts store in the city:

O que comprei é  30x30x15 cm
The one I bought was 12x12x6 in

Ok, so I'm on a very tight budget right now, therefore, I tried to make the best of the stash I already had...
  • Outside I decorated with paint and fabrics, finished with a trim.
  • Inside, I used two scrapbook (lavender) sheets I've had for a while
  • The finishing for the 'wallpapers' was made using a scrapbooking ribbon I've had for a while too
  • I also had the baseboard, I had bought at miniatures.com when I bought the one I used on my 19th century store (on hold for now...)

  • What about the flooring?... Well, for the floor I decided to try a technique I read about a long time ago and I had even recommended it to other people: parquet flooring using popsicle sticks! They are very inexpensive, as one bag with about 50 of them costs less then 50 cents (of a dollar).
Well, I can assure you I'll NEVER again recommend this technique!... hahaha... The final effect is beautiful, but...
  • the sticks come in different thickness and width, a nightmare for achieving a perfect finishing and fitting (I'm pretty picky about this)
  • they are extremely rough. So bad I'm not sure I'd ever use them for their intended purpose (holding popsicles which are to be put in the mouth! Tell me about splinters!...)
  • the wood they're made of, though easily breakable, is really HARD to saw (perpendicular to the vein), which is necessary to obtain the pieces in the right size. I could only manage to do that using my dremel tool. As I had to cut many of them, I improvised a cutting jig, but I hated working with that wood...
  • Their size is ideal for 1:6, as this setting proves it... NOT good for 1:12!!!
  • it was A LOT of work to sand them after glued in place, in order to make them even (level 'down'). It took me 3 days of hard work and manual sanding. I think that an orbital sander will make it to the list I'm sending to Santa this year, lol...
This pile won't fill half of the floor, lol...

Começando a fazer o piso....
Begining the parquet floor

Piso totalmente colado na base de papel-cartão.
Finished gluing the parquet floor on the card base.

You can see the different 'heights' of the wood pieces and the spaces between them (I filled those with a mix of glue and sawdust).

Piso terminado, 'sintecado' e colado no lugar.
Finished floor: sanded, varnished and glued in place.
Another interesting detail is that I had one of those cheap LED flashlights 'Made in China', the kind that uses small round coin batteries. I took it all apart, extended the wiring (had to use soldering iron here) and a micro-switch I bought online from an electronics store for $0.50 each. I used my dremel again to create some grooving where I'd fit the (round) wires, so that they wouldn't show beneath the wallpaper. The light fixture on the ceiling is actually the top of the flashlight itself... The postal package on the floor symbolizes the one that brought me the actual gift AND also hides the batteries!...

And as if that wasn't enough, to my greatest pleasure, another wonderful surprise: yesterday I got yet another gift, from my dear friend Edi Oliveira, a super-talented miniaturist who makes GORGEOUS orchids, out of cold porcelain. I LOVED it!!! How did she guess that my favorite color IS lavender???? (the actual color doesn't show well in the picture, though). I think she should open an online store and sell her OOAK creations to the world, don't you think? :)

Obrigada! Thank you!

Aí me perguntei: "Mais tarde, quando???"
I belong to an online minis group here in Brazil and they had been working on a group challenge when I joined. This project has an Italian inspiration and it's called 'Mamma Mia'. The members that are participating have been creating beautiful minis, like vegetable baskets, wall shelves, etc. Inspired by their creations I decided to work on a setting of my own. But I wanted to use stuff I've already had for a long time. I have this terrible habit: I get stuff but I never use them, always 'saving for later'. Then I end up making my own minis... This time I asked myself: "Later when, exactly???" Well, I decided that 'later' is now!!! :) so, to adapt the setting to what I already had, my theme is Provence, in Southern France, as this was the image I had and was going to use to decorate the outside of the 'container'...

the original box, as it came (cut in the middle and with metal hinges)

I bought the box/book some time ago. It's a mixture of MDF ("binding") and pine wood. But it was cut in half to open. So I removed the hinges, glued the middle, un-glued one of the 'covers' and used the same paper I used to cover the 'spine' of the 'book' as a hinge. I used a decoupage napkin to decorate the exterior.

I wanted to make the brick walls inside out of EVA 'bricks', a brilliant idea suggested by Regina Passy. But instead of cutting the bricks with scissors, I had the unfortunate idea of using craft knife and ruler, as I wanted to make sure they'd be straight. It didn't work!!! No matter how firmly I held the ruler, EVA slides and moves beneath it and each strip came out a slightly different size, and the result was horrible! I didn't want to make it all over again, so I used a printed paper instead, which I got at PaperBrick. I sprayed some varnish to protect and, using a matte water-based varnish, created some texture for some realism.

O piso foi criado com EVA. Desta vez cortei com tesoura. Fica MUITO bom.
But I did use the EVA to create the floor. This time I cut the parts with scissors. The result is AWESOME! I wanted it to look like ceramic tile floor, which has some shine to it, so I applied two coats of glossy varnish (Triple Thick) I have ever since I went to Chicago in 2010 (yes, I use it a lot and it's still good!!!)

I made the shelf/cabinet with cardstock. I changed the table legs, the original ones were too short, and I also changed the finishing. I made the same finishing on all three pieces: a green coat, rubbed some candle, an 'off white' coat (Delta Ceramcoat Seashell White) and then sanded to give it a 'weatherworn' look). The original table had a white top and the rest of the structure was natural wood, just varnished. I made the chair with kebab sticks and thin dowels, and a very old crochet thread for the seat. I made the book and placed some flowers (dried and dyed ones) on the garland and in the 'poultry' (?) vase. I also made the apron.

- jarro porcelana azul florido: Dollhouse Junction
- queijo com ratinhos: Ivani Grande
- cesta de verduras: não lembro!
- panela de cobre: Darlene Artesanatos
- todos os outros acessórios: John Constable, Canadá

I already had all the other items, collected over the years:
- dishes: MiniMárcia
- cheese and wine board: Reutter Porcelain
- bread (I added the texture to the cut surface!), knife, hanger: Cia das Artes
- blue porcelain jug: Dollhouse Junction
- cheese with mice: Ivani Grande
- basket with vegetables: I don't remember!
- copper pan: Darlene Artesanatos
- all the other items: purchased from John Constable, Canada
