I had bought this book some time ago. It shows how to build miniature stores, from the structure to the furniture and accessories. You can find it on Amazon.

Unfortunately, none of the stores was a fabrics one, lol... But I really liked one of the shelves used for a toys store.

I adapted the measures to my needs, changed one of the style items and added false doors to the bottom part. I don't want to fill in that part and I don't need the doors to open... This larger piece is meant to place the fabric bolts. It was made using cedar (boy its sawdust is so bitter! - ask me how I know, lol Have you ever washed your dog? So you know what soap tastes like... Same principle, lol And I did wear a mask!) This wood is quite hard to cut manually, and it takes long to be properly sanded. But the resulting furniture is really beautiful! Before varnishing, I stained the wood with a wash I prepared to change the reddish hue of that wood, which I didn't want for this project.

It took me 4 days to make the larger unit. I didn't want to waste that much time and have all the physical effort (fibromyalgia sucks!) again to make the other one. So I decided to make it using balsa wood. I'll show the step-by-step here, especially to demonstrate how to give balsa wood a nice finishing. It's easy, but it has its tricks.

O armário menor, em balsa, à esquerda, anted do acabamento
The smaller shelf, in balsa, on the left, before finishing.
I will not give any measures. You can cut the wood according to your own needs. Notice, for example, that I changed the height of the shelves to adjust them to my needs. What is important is to take into consideration the thickness of the wood you're using when you plan the parts you'll cut. For example, the bottom top has to have a length equal to the width of the back plus the thickness of both sides, plus a margin outwards on the front and on the sides to give the effect on the picture... Below you can see a picture of the pieces, already cut, both for the selves as for the bottom part, where the doors open, this time.

A primeira coisa a fazer é lixar a madeira cortada.
The first thing to do is to sand the wood, already cut. Be careful: always use a very light hand, and a fine grit sandpaper, like 400 or even higher, as long as it's been well worn out by previous use. Look how fine balsa sawdust is, almost like a fluff!

See the difference on the wood before and after being sanded.

antes de lixar
before sanding
depois de lixar
after sanding
To sand the sides of each part that you cut: do not rub the sandpaper against the wood or, as balsa is too soft, you might end sanding one side more than the other one, what might cause the side cut to be crooked, and it won't fit anymore! And try to sand similar parts at the same time, to avoid the same problem. Take two similar parts - like the sides of the bottom cabinet, for example - hold them firmly together, bottom flushed against the table.

Use a flat sandpaper, and place it flat on the table/working surface. I use a flat sandpaper glued to some kind of firm foam, originally sold for sanding feet, but it was bought to be used only on miniatures! Now rub the cut parts firmly held together on the sandpaper! Soft movements, as straight and vertical as possible.

And this is the result! Repeat on all parts, all four sides.

For the top and bottom of the cabinet I "rounded up" the front and the sides of each part. There will be two parts for each (top & bottom), which will be glued on. It's easy to do, all you need is a nail file. Eyeball the curvature.

I also "routed" the four sides of the panel that will be glued on each door, to create an interesting relief. Glue each on each door, keeping them secure until the glue dries.

Vamos começar a montar o armário.
Let's start assembling the cabinet. First, place the back on your working surface. Apply some glue to one of the sides. Glue the left side. Press it against a flat and straight object (like a thick ruler, for example), to make sure it's perpendicular. Let it dry. Then repeat on the other side, forming a "U".

Cole a prateleira do meio.
Glue the middle shelf. Use a lego piece, for example, to make sure it's at the same distance from the bottom on both sides.

Now glue only the top part of the bottom piece to the bottom of the cabinet. The bottom part of the top is only "holding place" there (you can't see the tape in the picture).

Cut a small piece (~1/4") of a pin or wire using wire cutters and insert half of it on the bottom side corner of the door, at least 1/16" from the lateral side. Slide the door on the side of the cabinet until the remaining part of the wire/pin enters the bottom part of the cabinet. Do the same on the other door. Put another piece of pin/wire on the top side of each door. Secure the doors in place (use masking tape, if needed), and slide the top of the cabinet (only the bottom of the double parts), making sure the pin/wire enters the wood.

Pronto!
There! Now you have working doors! Except that I placed the doors too close to the middle shelf, so I had to carve a small notch on each side of the shelf to allow the doors to open...

Make tiny holes where you'll put the handles. I used a piece of the same tiny turning I used before to make the thread reels. You could also use a bead and an earring pin, glued to the hole.

Cole a parte superior do tampo e a inferior do "piso" do armário.
Glue the top of the counter top and the bottom of the cabinet "floor".

Assemble the shelves unit the same way you did for the cabinet: start with the "U" then the top, then the shelves, and finally the separators.

For the ornament part on the top of the shelf, draw the pattern on a piece of paper (draw half of it on a folded paper, then copy to the other side against a source of light). Glue the paper to the wood with some tiny dots of glue. Remove the excess wood with a craft or x-acto knife and use some sandpaper glued to a dowel to sand the remaining wood until you reach the pattern line. Remove the pattern and sand the piece until it's smooth.

Glue to the top of the shelf, keeping firmly in place with clamps until the glue dries.

Using the same kind of baluster that I used to make the table, sand one of the sides to make it flat. I used 4 balusters, cut to fit each side, top & bottom.

And here is the assembled unit, next to the first one made of cedar.

Apply one coat of matte water based varnish on the whole unit to seal the wood, and sand lightly after it dries.
Time to adjust the color! I mixed acrylic paint, water based satin varnish and some water, as I didn't want to paint the wood, but just stain it, it had to be diluted. I adjusted the color gradually and kept testing it on a spare piece of wood, previously sealed like the unit - to simulate the same finish! When I was pleased with the color I prepared, I painted the whole unit (tip: prepare more than you think you'll need and keep it in a bottle or jar. It's hard to get the same color again, if you ran out of it!)

The golden stickers were bought from LadyBug. I ordered the golden ones, but they sent me the silver ones... Ok, I painted them golden and aged with water based bitumen, removing the excess.

Tirei a foto à noite, desculpe.
Finally varnish the whole unit with water based gloss varnish.
And here are the two units, side by side. The color is very similar, right? The light is not flattering - I took this picture at night, sorry! It took me one day to make the smaller unit, against the 4 I needed to make the larger one, due to the harder wood... They won't stay side by side in the store, actually, they'll be opposite to each other, so they don't need to be exactly the same.

Now only the smaller unit, already populated with accessories: ribbon & lace rolls, thread boxes, sewing machines, the thread holder I made, and some imported newspaper fashion insets that the customers can refer to when they are choosing the fabric they want to buy... Inside the cabinet: smaller fabrics pieces, laces, some corsets inside boxes (I don't think those would be on display...) :)

And the next time you see these units will be inside the store... :)

Aguarde!
PS: I'll need some time before I can post the next step. I'm preparing a surprise, and I can only show it when it's complete... Hang on!

Obrigada! Thank you!

O balcão - The counter

There will be one counter in my store. The cash register will go on it, and also the wrapping paper dispenser...

The cash register was a white resin one I found at one of my favorite crafts stores here. Quite a finding, as it's right to scale, which is really rare! All I had to do was paint it to look like copper or brass:

Then I found this excellent tutorial for a paper dispenser by Sudene, and made my own version of it. If the counter didn't have a glass front, I would have made it open only from the back (no doors) and would have filled it with shopping bags. But, on a second thought, I realized that shopping bags were not common in Brazil. Very fancy boutiques may have them, but my store is a "regular" one... I lived in a small town in the countryside - where novelties used to take decades to arrive! Even TV shows would take a week or longer to be aired there, after being aired in the capital of the state - and even in the 70's most stores would wrap your items in brown or a "pinkish" paper. Nope, not even brown paper bags or plastic bags were supplied. They'd use adhesive tape in my time, so I guess twine was the regular stuff to tie the parcels, back in the 19th century, right?

Then I had this idea of making some sewing boxes for sale. I used the same technique used in cartonnage, and a printable I found on Pinterest, except that I used real thread for the threads. I had bought the scissor in Chicago in 2010 and the measure tape (paper) came with a sewing (patterns) printed kit. I didn't take pictures of the "making of" because it was a "trial & error" thing. More errors than trials, which I had to keep correcting along the way... It took a lot of time to make this little box!!!

Printável que usei
Printable I used (not my creation)
I also made a display for the scissors for sale. Those were also bought in Chicago, I almost forgot I had them (2010). I imagine scissors would be expensive back then, therefore I thought that displaying them like "jewelry" would be a good idea :) the display itself was also made without careful planning. Trial & (loads of) errors until I got to this:

I didn't make this counter. I bought it from a national miniature store. I'm not crazy about it now. They used real glass, which makes it really thick for scale. They didn't sand the wood as well as I usually do, so it feels rough to the touch. The edges are not "soft" (slightly rounded), as I like to make them. Too "square" like this makes it look just like recently cut wood, in my opinion. And there's no shelf in the middle... As I said for the tiles, the bar has been raised... :) But, like with the tiles, I bought it to use in the store, so I will!

Someone has already bought something: it's already been wrapped and the change is there, waiting...

E então, o que achou?
What do you think?

Obrigada! Thank you!

Em vez de vitrine... - Instead of shop window

A cidade é, claro, Belo Horizonte.
If you follow my blog, you probably have already read that glass was scarce and expensive back in the 19th century. Actually, even in the first half of the 20th century as well. My mom was born in 1927. She lived in a brand new city, planned and built to be the new capital of a reasonably rich state, Minas Gerais. The city is Belo Horizonte. Her family was poor, but that's another story! And she told be that there was only one store with a window there, for a very long time.

But stores still needed to attract customers, and this is what shop windows usually do. So, what did they use instead? I found out, by examining old pictures, that they'd hang some of the store items on the door, or next to it:

Even now, in the 21st century, traditional fabrics store in old downtown of Sao Paulo, on one of the most traditional commercial streets, they still use this way of showcasing their fabrics:

Well, that's what I'd have to do, then! :)

Absolutamente brilhante!! Eu tinha que tentar!... E, de fato, funciona maravilhosamente bem:
The problem I had was that one of the fabrics I wanted to use was not cotton based. It was synthetic... And the traditional draping solutions I learned to use for cotton or silk, or natural fibers in general don't work at all! So I needed a new method... Fortunately I came across a very interesting tutorial by Kris. She shows how to make kitchen cabinets, but in the middle she came up with this very ingenious solution to drape fabric: glue it to aluminum foil! Absolutely brilliant!! I had to try it!... And indeed it worked beautifully:

The foil doesn't need to get to the border. Actually, I even removed some more later - so as not to show.

Roll up to the foil. I used a glue similar to fabri-tac to glue fabric on fabric or on wood. Tacky won't work.

Cole no topo.
Glue the fabric on the top.

I had prepared another of these, using white satin fabric. But my mom's cat visited my studio while I wasn't there and decided he had to exterminate that odd "ghost", which I had already placed by the door to check how it would sit there... Poor thing, never saw what hit it! I found the remains near the studio door... So I had to make another one. This time I decided to use some cotton fabric, with a printed pattern. I figure they weren't that common back then, and the store would be proud to exhibit it. Besides, it won't look so "ghostly" as the white one did, lol!
.

Cotton fabric doesn't need that foil trick. All you need to do is use a solution of hair gel (you read it right) diluted in water (one drop of gel to at least 6 table spoons of water). Spray, drape as you wish, hold in place with pins, wait for it to dry and voilá! You'll see the cotton one when I show the pictures of the finished store... :) I also made some large round fabric bolts to place under the table I made before. It's easier to roll the fabric on the table. If you try to do it in your hands it won't roll evenly, trust me.

Obrigada! Thank you!

Linhas & Fitas... - Threads & Ribbons

Now some accessories. Even before I build the shelves, I decided to make some accessories too.

My store will diversify its range of products. Initially I was going to have only bolts of fabric there. The initial project was part of a group one and other people would have other stores related to fashion, notions, etc. and I couldn't overlap their target market :) Now that I've been disassociated from the group project (something related to the building structure, I'd have to use one designed by the new owners), I'm free to expand my options. I decided to include ribbons, threads, and some sewing machines too. Anything a seamstress would need back then.

And I saw these charming wrought iron thread holders on the internet.

I decided to make something similar, not only to display the threats for sale at the store, but which could be bought as well. I used jewelry findings, earring pins and some tiny beads. I "aged" the shiny look of the findings using water based bitumen.

The thread spools were a laser cut kit I bought when I went to Chicago in 2010. They are by Bonnie Lavish. I believe it's the same kit you can buy from Dragonfly.

Well, just this display would not be enough. To be realistic, the store had to have more thread reels to sell, right? So I found a picture of an old coats reels box on the internet. I made a printable based on it.

Then I used some tiny turnings I've had for some time - which you can also buy at Dragonfly - to make more thread reels.

Then I glued one reel of each color/thread on the side of each box. Yellow for cotton, blue boxes for silk.

This resource is still in use today: they tie a "sample" of the item on the front side of the box that is on the shelf so that the salesperson knows what is inside.

Uma loja da cidade. Tem tudo o que vc imaginar!
A variety store in the city. They have anything you can imagine!
It's so common that Coats even created a modern plastic display to be used like that!

I also made some ribbons and laces reels, to be placed on a special display on the shelf I'm still to build. I need to know how large they'll be so I can build the shelf accordingly.. :)

The brackets will be stained the same color as the shelf.
After I finished my ribbon support, I found a great tutorial for a ribbon display at Nono Miniatures. Maybe next time I'll use it, but you can use it now!
Who has never made miniature cannot imagine this, but it took me longer to finish these "little things" than it took me to make the whole table from the previous post!...
.
Obrigada! Thank you!
